Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) - Joe Johnston

Captain America Is Marvel's Next

Kevin Feige, president of production for Marvel Studios and producer of the upcoming Iron Man movie, revealed that the company's next independently financed project will be a version of Captain America, which would mix a period story with a modern-day one.

"We'll have to play with Captain America as being a patriotic propaganda machine on one hand but also being a very human Steve Rogers, ... [an] interesting, fascinating hero in his own right," Feige told reporters on the set of Iron Man, which is in production in Playa Vista, Calif.

Is the script they're developing a period piece? "Right now what we're developing would be about half and half," Feige said.

Feige said that Captain America will aim for a PG-13 rating, like Iron Man. The comic studio has brought on writer David Self (Road to Perdition) to draft a screenplay. A director will be announced soon, Feige said. Production is expected to begin in a year.

Marvel, meanwhile, is gearing up production on The Incredible Hulk, which stars Edward Norton and is expected to commence principal photography on or around July 9, about the same time that Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr., wraps.

Marvel is also moving ahead on other productions, Feige said. Among them: Sub-Mariner, on which Jonathan Mostow is doing a rewrite of Self's script; Punisher 2, for which the studio would like to announce a director and actor soon; Thor, for which Mark Protosevich (The Cell) is drafting a script; and Wolverine, which will again star Hugh Jackman and will be released before the other X-Men spinoff, Magneto, which David S. Goyer will direct.

Actor para isto. Ryan Gosling. Um jovem actor, louro claro, muito promissor. Só tinha que ganhar umas massas musculares e tínhamos o Steve Rogers perfeito.

When Marvel announced that "Captain America" was making its way to the big-screen, fans everywhere began speculating who would be donning the famous red-white-and-blue tights. Nothing has been heard since, but during an MTV News interview regarding his role in "Miracle at St. Anna," actor Derek Luke let slip that a very prominent - and surprising - face could be the star of Marvel Studios' next blockbuster film.

"I heard they offered Will Smith ‘Captain America,'" said Luke, adding that the intriguing casting rumor "just shows you how times have changed."

While this word through the Hollywood grapevine is nothing more than a rumor at this point, it should be noted that Marvel hasn't shied away from changing up the race - and gender - of established characters in recent years. Upon kicking off his celebrated take on "The Ultimates" (Marvel's re-imagining of their classic superteam The Avengers), Mark Millar changed S.H.I.E.L.D. head honcho Nick Fury from a crew-cut, cigar-chomping, middle-aged white man to, well... Sam Jackson.

The decision, though aggressively debated back when the series debuted, seemed to receive some validation earlier this year when Jackson made his post-credits cameo in "Iron Man" as Fury.

Smith himself is no stranger to the four-color world, having recently starred as a down-on-his-luck superhero in "Hancock." Given the success of that film however, it seems almost a given that a sequel could be in the offing. That makes the prospect of Smith starring in yet another superhero franchise seem unlikely, especially given the subversive tone of "Hancock."

Along with providing some fresh material for the "Captain America" rumor mill, Luke also mentioned an interest in jumping into the superhero movie scene himself, and offered up a few characters he'd like to bring to the big screen.

"I would love to jump into Green Lantern," said Luke. "There are a lot of stories I'm into... [like] Black Panther."

"Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy's earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the 'Super-Soldier Serum' and bombarded by 'vita-rays.' Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and leader of the Avengers."

Joe Johnston to Direct Captain America!
Source:The Hollywood Reporter
November 9, 2008

Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III, Hidalgo) has signed a deal to direct First Avenger: Captain America, Marvel Studios' take on its classic comic book character, says The Hollywood Reporter. Marvel's Kevin Feige is producing.

No writers are on board, but the studio, which is hearing pitches, expects to hire shortly.

"This is a guy who designed the vehicles for 'Star Wars,' who storyboarded the convoy action sequence for 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' " Feige said. "From 'Rocketeer' to 'October Sky' to 'The Wolfman,' you can look at pieces of his movies and see how they lead to this one."

Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics, Captain America is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he became a symbol of the war effort, in and out of comics.

The character disappeared in the 1950s but was revived during the early era of Marvel Comics. He was reintroduced as part of the Avengers, the absence explained by having him being in a state of suspended animation during a war mission until found by the superteam.

First Avenger: Captain America is scheduled for a release on May 6, 2011. It will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in the modern day-set The Avengers.
