Theron & Jones Walk Into Haggis' Garden

Oscar winner Paul Haggis (Crash) in talks to next direct Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron in The Garden of Elah, eyeing a late-year start date for the drama, reports Variety.

Warner Independent Pictures will distribute domestically, because Warner Bros. owns the underlying material from which Haggis wrote the script.

Jones will play a career soldier whose son mysteriously goes AWOL, shortly after returning to the U.S. from the front lines in Iraq. Theron will play a local police detective who helps him get to the bottom of the soldier's disappearance.

Haggis has been scouting locations around Albuquerque and in Texas.

Genesis of the project was "Death and Dishonor," a Playboy magazine article written by Mark Boal that WB bought last year for Haggis and his producing partner Larry Becsey.

Este era um dos filmes que, dos que estreavam neste início de ano, tinha mais interesse em ver.
Acho que é um excelente filme, apesar de na segunda metade começar a perder um pouco do seu fulgor inicial.
Fantástico desempenho de Tommy Lee Jones, muito bem acompanhado pela Charlize Theron e a Susan Saradon.

Vi o filme e não o achei nada por aí além.

Não tem interpretações do outro mundo. Cada actor envolvido está bem no seu papel. O Tommy Lee Jones faz o seu papel tipico e a Charlize e a Susan Saradon, estão competentes. A História não é uma história normal, sem grandes surpresas ao longo do filme.

Acho filme um trabalho competente de todos os envolvidos mas, acho que falta ali algo.

Se não fosse pelos actores, passaria por um telefilme dramatico de sábado à noite.

A última cena do filme, com a bandeira ao contrário, deixou-me a pensar se o filme não serviu apenas de desculpa para o realizador dar uma opinião politica.

Vi ontem finalmente este filme, tendo uma opinião algo semelhante à do Rocha.

É um filme sólido, sem grandes falhas a apontar, mas não me conseguiu envolver. A representação do Tommy Lee Jones é realmente boa e é bem secundado por duas excelentes actrizes, mas fiquei com a ideia de que aquele naipe de actores poderia ter sido mais bem explorado.

Acaba é por ser um filme de investigação, com a fórmula já algo gasta por vários filmes do género. É verdade que a história é original, mas a estrutura é a do costume.

Percebo que a forma (quase panfletária) como o filme aborda a questão da guerra no Iraque tenha feito com que o filme ganhasse alguma simpatia, mas falta-lhe realmente algo.

Apesar das falhas anteriormente apontadas, não deixa de ser um bom filme na qual me envolvi. Excelente interpretação do Tommy Lee Jones.
Mas concordo, falta qualquer coisa para ser excelente. Normalmente sinto isso quando não há "zonas cinzentas". Neste caso o filme até tem uma ou duas, mas deviam ter sido mais elaboradas.

Penso que tem interesse mais para quem viu o filme.

I have watched this movie about 3 times in the past 2 years, the first time was while I was in Iraq for my second time. This movie has motivated me to get onto the Internet, come here, register, and post this.

This movie is such an insult to me by the way it depicts the U.S. Army. The ice cold barracks, the fellow soldiers you cannot trust or respect, the unchecked sadistic nature of these soldiers. It's war hating, soldier disrespecting propaganda. It was bad enough without the upside down American flag. Yes, if the state of U.S. Army was actually as it is displayed in this movie, then yes that scene would be fitting, but this is not true.

While active duty in the Army for over 5 years, a junior enlisted to sergeant in the ranks, in the 3rd infantry division, and 2 year+ deployments to central Iraq under my belt I think this movie is a pure crock of you know what. And no, I'm not a right wing bush voting war monger.

Was this movie dramatic enough to hold my interest? Yes. But for this bleak world around a military base to be depicted as truth and honestly is absolute crap. I have never seen so much dreariness anywhere in the U.S. Army. I don't know how to go on with words, I Just want to put the word out there that fictional depictions of life, like portrayed in this movie, do far more harm than good.

Post traumatic stress does exist, it has taken a while for me to stop missing being deployed, I missed the camaraderie, my buddies, and the excitement of deployment life, and no it was not about baby killing and slaughter. The issues that this movie is supposed to represent should be out there, and they are, but this ridiculous portrayal is a disgrace to those who serve, and care, and try to be honorable on a daily basis.
