September 6: THE THING prequel on the way

Studios have become savvy to the fact that it’s just as profitable to go back as it is to go forward, and it appears the boys at Strike Entertainment—the same company that brought us the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, SLiTHER, and the forthcoming historical epic 300 (which looks amazing)—feel this is the key ingredient to bring THE THING back to the big screen. Fango has learned that Strike is combing Hollywood for a writer (or writers) to tackle a THING prequel. Since the production house works solely with Universal, which gave us John Carpenter’s classic 1982 THING remake, this is understandable.

The gestation period on a new THING has been a long one. Since Carpenter’s film—starring Kurt Russell, a bevy of amazing character actors and the timeless, inimitable special FX of Rob Bottin—overcame initial critical and public derision to become a modern classic, Universal has pondered just what to do with a property that is ripe for follow-up status. Many have stepped in to lend their two cents, beginning with Dark Horse Comics, which created a miniseries back in the early ’90s that was the next best thing to getting a full-blown cinematic continuation. Then George Clooney flirted with the idea of bringing the original story, “Who Goes There?” (by John W. Campbell), to the small screen in a project similar to the black-and-white FAIL SAFE he executive-produced; then the THING video game came along; then Frank Darabont was attached to a Sci-Fi Channel original movie. Embora seja normal serem feitas sequelas, prequelas e remakes de fraca qualidade (exorcista 0, Escape in LA, Remake do the Fog), como o the Thing é um dos meus filmes preferidos vou ter esperança que façam alguma coisa de jeito, até porque a história tem potencial...

Parece que o remake sempre vai acontecer. Ronald D. Moore, produtor da nova série televisiva Galactica, foi destacado pela Universal para o argumento do filme. David Foster, que produziu o original de Carpenter, vai produzir também este remake.

Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures will remake John Carpenter's The Thing, reports Variety.

The script will be written by "Battlestar Galactica" executive producer Ronald D. Moore. The 1982 original dealt with a shape-shifting creature from outer space that terrorizes researchers at an Antarctic facility.

Strike partners Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce and the company will co-finance the remake, to which Universal owned the rights. David Foster, who produced the original film, will executive produce.

Carpenter's film continued the storyline of the Howard Hawks-directed The Thing From Another World. That 1951 film starred James Arness as an alien monster that wiped out workers at an Army radar station.

Carpenter's film opened with a team arriving to find that encampment has been wiped out. The alien moved from the body of one team member to another, so it was never quite clear who the villain was.

The producers said they consider the new film to be more "a companion piece" to the Carpenter film than a note-for-note remake.

Ainda não tive a oportunidade de ver a nova BG (só a mini-série piloto) mas pelo que tenho lido fizeram um excelente trabalho em revitalizar material antiquado. O The Thing está muito longe de o ser, mas nas mãos desta gente o remake parece ter algumas hipóteses. Estou intrigado!

Embora respeite o direito á liberdade de expressão artística de toda a gente, aqui penso que talvez fosse boa ideia deixar o soberbo filme original em paz... A Strike e a Universal até fizeram um bom trabalho com o remake do Dawn of the Dead,que aliás de remake pouco tinha, e Ronald Moore é um argumentista talentoso (a nova Battlestar Galactica é uma BOMBA!!!), mas, neste caso, não me parece que consigam trazer algo de novo senão uns efeitos CGI que vão destruir toda a essência orgânica e animal dos efeitos originais de Rob Bottin.
Acho que seria melhor investir num conceito novo...A ver vamos.Espero enganar-me!

Primeira questão... não sei se será correcto assumir o filme de 1982 como uma nova versão do de 1951, mas sim como uma versão mais fiel à short-story de John W. Campbell, "Who goes there ?" (publicada em português num volume da colecção Argonauta - curiosamente, se não estou em erro, num número do Isaac Asimov).

Segunda questão... nova mosca ? Well...

Semana dos trailers



Nao é remake , é uma prequela...mas tem muitas semelhanças com o filme do Carpenter. Um pouco estranho.

A Mary Elizabeth Winstead bem dirigida acho que podia dar uma espécie de Ripley (jovem).

Bolas, confesso que o trailer não me seduziu nem um bocadinho... muita gritaria, efeitos especiais e rugidos aterradores, mas onde está a alma? Aquele não sei quê que não se sabe explicar bem, mas que se sente perfeitamente?

Bom, vamos dar uma hipótese ao filme...


Nota: ao contrário do trailer, já a Mary Elizabeth Winstead, sobretudo desde o Death Proof que me seduz completamente...
