Só agora é que reparei que não existia nenhum tópico sobre este filme.
Para quem não sabe este filme marca o regresso do Coppola atrás das câmaras após 10 anos de ausência (creio que ninguém quer contar com a salganhada que foi o Supernova). Aqui fica o (raramente actualizado) site oficial e as últimas notícias sobre o filme:

Coppola recently wrapped on "Youth Without Youth," his first directorial work in decade, with Tim Roth, Alexandra Maria Lara and Bruno Ganz starring in an adaptation of a novel by the Romanian philosopher Mircea Eliade. Story of an elderly man hit by lightning and suddenly returning to his youth begins in 1938 and continues through WWII, roaming from Bucharest to Switzerland to India to Malta.

Coppola also wrote and financed "Youth Without Youth" himself, using funds from his winery business. He said Tuesday that "Tetro" will be shot in the same kind of production style and budget range.

He also said "Youth" would be released in the second half of 2007, but noted it hasn't been set with a domestic distributor.

"Walter Murch, our editor, says, 'An unfinished film is like a dog without its skin,' so we've really not shown it yet," Coppola told Daily Variety. "We're just mixing the last reels and will be all finished by Feb. 22 or so and then begin to present it to distributors."

Inside Move: Coppola tackles 'Youth'
Film is director's first since 1997

The new United Artists led by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner is in talks to acquire "Youth Without Youth," Francis Ford Coppola's first film since 1997's "Rainmaker." Move would reunite Coppola with Cruise, whom he cast as an unknown in his 1983 pic "The Outsiders." UA had no comment.

Coppola adapted, produced and directed "Youth Without Youth" from the 1976 novel by Romanian-born religious historian Mircea Eliade. Coppola screened the film on Feb. 22 for friends in the Bay Area, including Carroll Ballard and George Lucas.

He showed the pic to individual distributors in Los Angeles on Friday and over the weekend. Reaction has been mixed, but several distribs were pursuing the project, being shopped the old-fashioned way by Coppola attorney Barry Hirsch.

Inspired by his daughter Sofia to make a low-budget personal film, Coppola may have skipped the festival route of selling the movie after witnessing the stir that her pic "Marie Antoinette" faced at Cannes last May.

Financed independently with foreign pre-sales from Pathe Intl. and funds from Coppola's own winery, the $5 million film, which Coppola shot last winter in Romania, stars Tim Roth as a 70-year-old who is struck by lightning and suddenly gets younger and more brilliant. His quest: to understand the origin of language and consciousness. By movie's end, he and the love of his life (Alexandra Maria Lara) are literally speaking in tongues. Bruno Ganz also stars, and Matt Damon makes a cameo appearance.

"Youth Without Youth" is both "intellectually challenging and emotionally remote," said one acquisitions exec at a studio subsid. Another distrib likened the film to an arty "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Hm... não sabia que a UA tinha voltado à produção/distribuição, ainda por cima liderados pelo Tom Cruise.

Bem, não deixam de ser óptimas notícias. O Tom Cruise sempre teve olho para os filmes que devia apoiar. Além de que do Coppola espero sempre o melhor. Espero bem que não demore a cá chegar. Já era hora de termos o nosso "gordo" de volta!!

Eu vi este filme em 2007 no Festival de Cinema Europeu, e de facto é muito bom.

Aconselho a todos, foi uma autentica surpresa.

Eu vi o filme hoje e sinceramente desiludiu-me.
O conceito é muito bom, e o mesmo se pode dizer dos actores, mas o seu ritmo é inconstante, e o facto de misturar demasiados conceitos e ideias para tão curto espaço de tempo (apesar das suas duas horas) faz com que o que poderia ser o seu ponto forte se torne no seu ponto fraco.
Dava no entanto uma boa mini-série, um pouco à semelhança do Taken de Spielberg(apesar deste nada ter a ver com ETs claro)

Se há algo que este filme me provou, foi que é definitivamente idiota deixarmo-nos levar por críticas lidas. Tinha lido há meses uma crítica que referia ser este um filme "menor" de Coppola e confesso que isso terá contribuído para só o ter visto agora.

Só vi este filme ontem e sinceramente conseguiu-me encantar, o que já vai sendo raro. Um filme que achei intimista, muito belo, de grande sensibilidade, que revisita importantes questões filosóficas e que tem também uma fotografia absolutamente extraordinária.

Para ver com muita calma, e em ambiente apropriado (sugiro o visionamento à noite, num écrã de alta definição, às escuras e em silêncio) quando nos apetecer ver 2 horas de excelente cinema!

Recomendo vivamente!

O Copolla tem uma história esquisita. O homem fez vários filmes medianos antes de Godfather. Depois tem 7 anos a fazer 4 dos melhores filmes de sempre e depois nunca mais faz algo de extraordinário. Faz pensar se ele esforçou-se tanto na altura que "queimou-se" ou se tinha alguém mais genial a trabalhar para ele.

É pena...
