Parece que o western é aquele género que está sempre às portas da morte, mas nunca perece!
Estão para sair vários westerns que podem ser bastante interessantes, como The Hateful Eight, Jane Got a Gun, Bone Tomahawk ou Diablo, onde apostam nos genes Eastwood... o filho, Scott!

Bem, não sei se o Western está outra vez na moda (talvez não) mas o facto é que têm saído (e ainda vão sair) uns filmes interessantes dentro deste género. Com malta bem interessante (realizadores e atores).
Há dois géneros que acabam por desaparecer, mantendo apenas uns poucos filmes por ano.
Westerns e Musicais...
Curiosamente parece que os Westerns acabam sempre por aparecer um ou outro todos os anos, mas sem dúvida diferentes dos anos 40/50.
Mas que é curioso é...
Para mim, Lawrence Kasdam e Clint Eastwood tem muita culpa por este género estar a resistir bravamente ao seu fim.

Sim, e a questão do dinheiro que esses filmes fazem (a maior parte deles de "Majors") continuará a ser decisiva porque a partir do momento em que houver uma quebra geral significativa de receitas no género, o Western será mais uma vez esquecido, ou posto de lado.
Mas é bom que surjam todos estes filmes, acaba por ser sinal de que ainda há quem ache que vale a pena fazê-los. É um género que me diz algo, cresci tb a ver filmes de "cowboys e índios", e vou ter pena no dia em que o Western ficar moribundo. :(

1 - são filmes feitos maioritariamente em espaços abertos o que aumenta os custos de produção;
2 - são filmes feitos sobretudo para o mercado norte-americano, e todos sabemos o peso que as bilheteiras internacionais têm actualmente na decisão de se fazer um filme ou não.
De qualquer forma, acho que o género nunca esteve realmente morto e exemplo disso são os bons westerns que se têm feito ao longo dos anos, de que Bone Tomahawk acaba por ser o último exemplo (segundo notícias que vêm lá de fora).
Eu acrescentaria um nome aos que o Rui Santos referiu como responsáveis pelo género não ter caído completamente em desgraça: Kevin Costner, pelo brilhantismo de Hatfields and McCoys e sobretudo por essa obra-prima semi-esquecida chamada Open Range, um filme definitivamente a descobrir, e, na minha opinião, facilmente o melhor western americano produzido depois de Unforgiven.

Concordo com tudo o que disseste, apenas meto em questão o que está a "bold".
A maioria dos filmes de ação, terror indie são filmados em espaços abertos (florestas, por exemplo), muitas vezes filmados com câmeras digitais, e são filmes baratos. Se me falares em cenários, terem que construir parte de uma cidade do "velho Oeste", tentar fazer reconstrução histórica através de decors, essa parte até acredito que custe alguma coisa. Agora "espaços abertos" por si só, não estou a ver aonde terão que fazer grandes investimentos, Até porque são filmes que não pedem muitos "efeitos especiais" (a não ser alguma pirotecnia utilizada através de explosões ou algo do género).
Olhemos por exemplo para o que aparece no boxofficemojo como o orçamento para "The Hateful Eight": 44 milhões de dólares (quantia mediana para aquilo que costuma ser uma produção de Hollywood).
O problema dos espaços abertos prende-se mais com os custos de transporte de material e pessoas de um lado para o outro. E muitas vezes com as limitações a nível climatérico. Já para não falar em autorizações, licenças e afins. Acredita que, em geral, é muito mais difícil filmar em exteriores que interiores e qualquer realizador te confirmará isso.
Outro detalhe: Hollywood investe cada vez menos em filmes de orçamento médio, isto é, entre os 20 e os 100 milhões de dólares. Ou se investe em filmes de baixo orçamento que dão sempre retorno ou em produções gigantescas.
Grande falha @waltsouza não teres mencionado o The Dark Valley como o The Salvation. E mesmo assim falta-me outro que saiu recentemente, também bastante bom, mas deu-me uma branca com o nome dele.

O "Open Range" com a dupla Costner/Duvall é mesmo muito bom.
Juntamente com o "True Grit" e o "3:10 to Yuma" são para mim o que de melhor se fez em termos de western nestes últimos anos .
"Django Unchained" e "The Hateful Eight" simplesmente não convencem .
Para ver paródia num western prefiro muito mais "The Ridiculous 6" em que ao menos me parti todo a :
Ainda que os westerns tenham sido um dos géneros cinematográficos mais populares da história do cinema e ainda tenha muitos fãs, a produção de filmes deste género é praticamente residual nos tempos que correm, principalmente depois do desastre comercial do filme Heaven's Gate, de Michael Cimino. Contudo, houve ainda alguns sucessos comerciais posteriores que foram, inclusive, galardoados com o Óscar de melhor filme, como Dances with Wolves, de Kevin Costner, ou Unforgiven, de Clint Eastwood.
O tipo de personagem mais comum deste género é o cowboy solitário que vagueia de cidade para cidade, apenas com a roupa que traz no corpo, um revólver e um cavalo.
É um género que passa um pouco ao lado dos prémios. Por exemplo nos Óscares apenas 3 arrecadaram o prémio para melhor filme - Cimarron, Dances With Wolves e Unforgiven.

Goste-se ou não, será o John Wayne o pináculo do género?
Outro dos meus géneros favoritos, há anos fiz a excelente (e cara) colecção da Planeta Agostini, e sempre que posso, vou completando a minha dvdteca com clássicos, e também algumas raridades do Western Spaghetti.
Quanto ao pináculo dos westerns, concordo com o walt que é o Joyhn Wayne (grande ator, com umas opiniões políticas com que não concordo minimamente), mas graças ao enorme John Ford, sendo o meu favorito o superlativo O Homem Que Matou Liberty Valance (e na área dos spaghettis, o C'era Una Volta Il West).
Têm-se feito muitos e bons westerns nos últimos anos, dos quais destaco, por curiosidade, um filme do Kóstenere que foi mal recebido na altura, mas que é um belíssimo exemplo do género, o Open Range, e já agora, destaco também o Apaloosa, do Ed Harris.
O Slow West, do ano passado, também é um filme interessante, mais "pós-moderno", e o Homesman é um filmalhão, mas mais deprimente que ouvir música pimba...
Merhor filme western para mim dos últimos 10 anos?
True Grit, um dos melhores dos Irmãos Cohen.

Na baliza Jackson, defesa com Scorsese, Coppola, Spielberg e Eastwood. No meio campo, Ridley Scott, Wes Anderson, Pollack e Carpenter. Avançados, Woody, e solto nas alas Tarkovsky. Suplentes: Bunuel, Fellini, Kurosawa, Visconti, Antonioni, Lynch e Burton.
E mesmo assim falta-me outro que saiu recentemente, também bastante bom, mas deu-me uma branca com o nome dele.
