Peter Watkins - Prova de vida

Peter Watkins, bem como outro Peter - Greenaway -, são dois dos enfants terribles do cinema britânico e mundial. E nós agradecemos por isso (eu, pelo menos). O último filme de Peter Watkins, esse objecto singular, extremamente interessante, de quase 6 horas, chamado La Commune (Paris, 1871), é de 2000. Desde então, Peter Watkins nunca mais realizou qualquer filme ou documentário. Ele, que já aparecia pouco em público, tornou-se ainda mais recatado e reclusivo, tendo sido convidado, do que sei, apenas algumas vezes por algumas universidades para dar palestras com a sua visão crítica da geopolítica mundial e da crise nos media. Que seja do meu conhecimento, não há fotografias dele actuais. As últimas imagens conhecidas dele são de 2001. É muito difícil encontrar à venda os filmes dele, sobretudo as distopias de âmbito mais político e geopolítico, que abrangem o período entre 1967 e 1977 (Privilege, The Gladiators, Punishment Park, The Trap e Evening Land). Não sabia era que a escassez tinha aumentado, o que é lamentável. É um realizador incómodo com uma obra controversa mas até outros realizadores incómodos de obra controversa como Michael Haneke ou Lars von Trier têm tido a sua obra amplamente distribuída.

Peter Watkins, actualmente com 88 anos, ressurgiu em Agosto com um site próprio com referências à sua obra e um texto da sua autoria em conjunto com a esposa, que acho que é sueca. Neste texto, que mais parece um comunicado, Watkins dá uma prova de vida onde expressa lamentos, críticas e indicações importantes sobre onde e como poderemos adquirir DVDs dos seus filmes, bem como de que forma é que a obra dele, quer os filmes, quer os documentários, têm sido preservados nestes últimos 23 anos. Peter Watkins anuncia também que está a preparar um documento em PDF que diz que será a sua declaração final. Parece-me que será uma carta de despedida da sétima arte.

With much regret, my spouse Vida and I have decided to set aside the administrative work we have been engaged on since 2000, as well as responding to requests to make copies of my work available for screenings. We are handing over this administrative work, as well as the rights to the moral ownership of my work (being part of my legacy), to my sons Patrick and Gerard Watkins, who will respond to future messages and requests via the CONTACT page on this website.

Formerly, beginning in the 1960s, my work was shown either on TV, as theatrical screenings in cinemas, or was available as DVDs. The ongoing suppression of my work and the standardisation of film form, means that TV no longer shows my work. With the marked exception of Doriane Films in Paris (see below) DVDs of my work are seldom available, and my films are also rarely invited into cinemas for theatrical screenings. To prevent the literal disappearance of my work, therefore, and with the invaluable aid of the former Canadian distributor Oliver Groom, over the past few years we have built up a collection of digital FILE copies of my work. These files are the versions of my work which Patrick and Gerard will now be handling, and which will be available under certain conditions for showing in cinemas, small group screenings, and for use in media education in schools.

I am also now preparing a full length PDF document detailing my film work, its ongoing marginalization and its support. I hope that this critical statement, and its analysis of the profound crisis in the audiovisual media, will be available for debate at any screenings of my work. In the meantime, before the statement is completed, please note that this website – designed by Al Urbonavičius in Toronto - already contains earlier summary versions of each film with brief summaries of the professional resistance to my work, as well as an earlier example of one of my full-length critical statements.

Please note that my work is not intended for screening at those festivals which use 'pitching' to select future TV productions or documentaries, festivals which decline to allow adequate time for debates (or even no time at all), or festivals where the films are set to compete against each other.

Tirando o British Film Institute e a Masters of Cinema mais ninguém distribui os filmes do Watkins. E é isto... Um grande autor injustamente esquecido/arredado. Provavelmente só após a sua morte será feita a revisão da sua obra.
Estou certo que tem filmes que vão ao encontro de alguns membros do fórum

Exacto. A Masters of Cinema distribuiu o Punishment Park e o BFI distribuiu o The War Game, produzido pela BBC. Foi o último dos trabalhos do Peter Watkins produzido pela BBC onde, aliás, ele trabalhou, no início dos anos 60, como editor assistente e realizador de documentários. Há uma edição holandesa do The Gladiators, mas está esgotada há muito. Actualmente, a única forma de se conseguir os outros filmes dele e os documentários parece ser mesmo através da distribuidora francesa que ele indicou no comunicado no site e, de facto, se se pesquisar por Peter Watkins, estão lá todos e até em VOD, incluindo dois packs com a filmografia completa: https://www.capuseen.com/films?search_o ... =relevance

É lamentável o esquecimento a que Watkins está votado, pois trata-se de um grande realizador, muito inteligente e que praticamente inventou o que hoje se chama de docudrama.
