Star Trek Sequel Already In Development

It's still got just over a month to go until release, but Star Trek is already set to be sequel-ised, with screenwriters Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof set to write a script.

Storyline-wise, the threesome are waiting to see what the fan reaction to the first film is before getting too specific. Said Kurtzman, "Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month. With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."

The trio have recently been working together on Cowboys Vs Aliens (not to be confused with this week's ace Monsters Vs Aliens), although Orci and Kurtzman have worked as a duo for years and wrote this Star Trek script without Lindelof. The latter, however, co-created Lost with director JJ Abrams, so it's fair to say he's got some sci-fi pedigree too.

Abrams will be producing the sequel, but hasn't yet confirmed whether he will step back into the director's chair. The hope is, however, that the screenwriters can finish this script by Christmas, for a summer 2011 release.

Unsure about whether this is a good idea or not? Watch the trailer again and rejoice. After all, if this is this generation's Star Trek: The Motion Picture, imagine how good its Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan could be.

Will The Star Trek Sequel Be Titled Star Trek Into Darkness?

One of the most anticipated movies of next year may have found its title. After months of referring to J.J. Abrams' next film The Untitled Star Trek Sequel, it seems as though the official name of the project has been revealed and it is: Star Trek Into Darkness.

The news of the new title comes from a source over at Coming Soon. While they haven't been able to officially confirm the information with Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the project, the site points out that both www.startrekintodarkness.com and www.startrekintodarknessmovie were recently registered on the site Markmonitor, which Paramount also used when they purchased domain names for G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

Part of the reason why it's interesting that this news drops today is because tomorrow is the 46th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek (and there's even a Google Doodle to celebrate it). Quotes from Zachery Quinto about the project also surfaced online today, the actor calling the new film bigger and bolder than Abrams' reboot.

Star Trek Into Darkness (if that's what it ends up being called) will feature returning stars Quinto, Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, and Anton Yelchin and feature newcomers such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, Peter Weller and Noel Clarke. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Damon Lindelof wrote the script and the movie will be in theaters on May 17, 2013.

Eu pessoalmente gostei do Star Trek.

An official synopsis for 'Star Trek Into Darkness' offers more hints about the villain

It is amazing to me that we are this close to the release of "Star Trek Into Darkness" and no one has been able to confirm the identity of the bad guy in the film so far.

There was a period of time where everyone was absolutely sure that Khan was going to be the villain again, and even when I got JJ Abrams to state on the record that he was not going to be the bad guy, people insisted that they were sure. Benedict Cumberbatch, best known right now for his outstanding work in the BBC's "Sherlock," was eventually cast as the film's antagonist, which would seem like very strange casting for Khan.

We're about to start finally getting concrete information about the film, and I am eager to see the nine-minute opening sequence that will be screening in front of "The Hobbit" at every IMAX screening when the film opens next month. I would imagine that opening will clearly establish the tone of the new film and give us some idea of where things are going to head in terms of story.

For now, though, the best information we've gotten comes in the form of the film's official synopsis, released by Paramount:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes "Star Trek Into Darkness." When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The tease is still in full effect there, and it raises possibilities about who Cumberbatch is playing. He could be Gary Mitchell… he could be Charlie X… I suppose he could even be Khan based on that description… but appropriately enough, none of those possibilities fit that synopsis exactly. And that's the way it should be. After all, the timeline these stories take place in is not the same timeline that the original series was set in, so things shouldn't play out exactly the same way. Abrams and his creative collaborators gave themselves a lot of room to navigate, and it sounds like this will build nicely from everything they did in the first film.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" arrives in theaters May 17, 2013.
