Sweeney Todd to Start Filming Early 2007

DreamWorks Studios announced today that Johnny Depp has been set to star and Tim Burton to direct Sweeney Todd, the award-winning Stephen Sondheim musical thriller.
The co-production with Warner Bros. will star Johnny Depp as the titular Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Depp is currently starring in the record-breaking blockbuster, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
Sweeney Todd marks the 6th collaboration between the actor and director. The previous Burton-Depp films have been Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow.
Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will partner with Richard Zanuck and John Logan to produce the screenplay adaptation which was written by Logan. Production is planned to begin early next year for a late 2007 release. Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks domestically and Warner Bros. internationally.
The Broadway production of Sweeney Todd, with Sondheim's music and lyrics and a book by Hugh Wheeler based on the play by Christopher Bond, opened in 1979 and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Its mix of the comic, the dramatic and the macabre held together by Sondheim's movie-like score has had hundreds of productions throughout the world. A highly acclaimed revival is now playing in New York.
The story of Sweeney Todd is of a wrongfully imprisoned barber in Victorian England who sets out to seek revenge on the judge who imprisoned him. The plot is foreshadowed in the first lines of the opening number: "Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd./His skin was pale and his eye was odd./He shaved the faces of gentlemen/Who never thereafter were heard of again."
Sondheim is known in the theater for the lyrics to "West Side Story" and "Gypsy," the music and lyrics for "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Company," "Follies," "A Little Night Music" and the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Sunday in the Park With George," among others, as well as the film scores of Stavisky and Reds (the latter co-written with Dave Grusin) and the Academy Award®-winning Best Original Song "Sooner or Later" from the Warren Beatty movie Dick Tracy.
Former DreamWorks co-heads Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald have produced or executive produced a wide range of critically and commercially successful films, including the Oscar-winning Gladiator, the "Men in Black" and "Ring" series, as well as Catch Me If You Can, Minority Report, and The Terminal, the latter all directed by Steven Spielberg.
Sweeney Todd will mark Richard Zanuck's third collaboration with DreamWorks, having produced Deep Impact and Road to Perdition for the studio. The film will also mark Zanuck's reunion with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton with whom he produced last year's international hit Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Among his many films, Zanuck won a Best Picture Oscar as a producer for Driving Miss Daisy and has received the Academy's Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for consistently producing high quality motion pictures.
Tim Burton is also developing the Paramount production of Ripley's Believe It Or Not.
Producer/Writer John Logan's most recent screenplays were The Aviator and The Last Samurai, and he was nominated for an Oscar for his work on DreamWorks' Gladiator.

Segundo a Production Weekly, Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat; Ali G) poderá contracenar ao lado de Johnny Depp na adaptação de Tim Burton do musical de Stephen Sondheim Sweeney Todd.
Borat vs. Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd
Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen is in talks to join Johnny Depp in Tim Burton's adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical thriller Sweeney Todd, reports Production Weekly.
The story of Sweeney Todd (Depp) is of a wrongfully imprisoned barber in Victorian England who sets out to seek revenge on the judge who imprisoned him. Cohen will play Signor Adolfo Pirelli, Todd's competitor in the haircutting world.
Production set to begin shooting in early February at Pinewood Studios near London. Pre-recordings will begin in November and December.
Helena Bonham Carter (quem mais) irá interpretar a diabólica Mrs. Lovett!

Director Tim Burton tapped Carter to co-star with Johnny Depp in the DreamWorks Studios and Warner Bros. co-production of the Stephen Sondheim musical. John Logan wrote the screenplay.
Mrs. Lovett, a role originated onstage by Angela Lansbury, is a murderess who dispenses her victims' bodies in meat pies and becomes the amorous accomplice of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In most stage productions, Mrs. Lovett has been about a decade older than the Demon Barber and is usually someone in her 50s; Carter and Depp are about the same age and in their early 40s.
Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen is rumored to be circling the role of rival barber Signor Adolfo Pirelli, but the studio would not confirm whether he'll be part of the mix.
Shooting begins in early next year for a late 2007 release, with Paramount distributing domestically for DreamWorks, and Warner Bros. handling international territories.
Carter, Burton's longtime off-screen partner, has been a regular collaborator onscreen. She has starred in the Burton-directed films Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish and Planet of the Apes, and provided the title voice for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.
Carter, who will sing in the film, just wrapped Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Aqui ficam alguns pontos sobre Sweeney Todd numa entrevista exclusiva do site aintitcoolnews a Tim Burton:
Link para a entrevista completa: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/30438HK: How're things going on SWEENEY TODD?
TB: Oh, it's just early days, you know. It's interesting. I've never done something like this before, so the casting process is quite different and interesting. I'm right in the middle of that. I'm excited because it's something new for me, so... just a whole new process.
HK: What do you mean by it being so different for you?
TB: Well, just doing a musical kind of thing. I mean, I've done... with the animated things, there's music and stuff, but this is a different process. I don't know. You just look for different things. It's just slightly different than what I'm used to.
HK: This has been one that has been floating around with you...
TB: I've always loved it 'cause it's... I don't know... I remember when I first saw it on stage it was this sort of Grand Guignol kind of horror movie musical. I always loved it for that.
HK: Are there going to be stylistic similarities to the way you handled that sort of Grand Guignol sort of stuff in SLEEPY HOLLOW?
TB: Well, you know... yeah, I do love those kinds of movies and things, so yeah... there's certainly probably a bit of that in there. Just those old expressionist movies and old horror movies, but that juxtaposed against the music, which is so beautiful and strong. I don't know... it's just an interesting combination to me.
HK: I can't wait to see it.
TB: Me, too! (laughs)
HK: I just can't wait to see how Johnny (Depp) handles that character.
TB: That's what's great about him. He's just so game, he's so into trying different things, too. So, that's going to be exciting.
Finalmente tornou-se oficial, a Variety confirma Sacha Baron Cohen para o papel de Adolfo Pirelli.

Cohen will play Signor Adolfo Pirelli, a barber who becomes the nemesis of Sweeney Todd. Todd's the barber who teams with the murderess Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) to kill people, grind them up and use them in her meat pies.
Alan Rickman junta-se ao cast e irá interpretar o papel de juiz Turpin:
