http://dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=60715Interesting developments in the HD-DVD world suggest that the new high definition format may not feature region coding. The first hardware is expected to appear in the next month or so courtesy of Toshiba who are incorporating an HD-DVD reader/writer into their Qosmio G30 home entertainment laptop.
The big news is that the drive will not check for region coding - given Toshiba are the main name behind the HD-DVD format this is as strong a sign as any that HD-DVD will not be locked to regions.
Some suggest that the reasoning behind this is that the first titles will be back-catalogue releases and therefore region coding would be redundant on these discs. But, if the first hardware out there doesn't even check for region then all future releases from anywhere in the world should play back without issues. If the HD-DVD spec is to include region locks then you'd expect the main HD-DVD supporters to release hardware from the start which supports this.
This follows earlier reports that Sony are likely to drop region coding from the rival Blu-Ray format for it's upcoming Playstation 3 games. Could this be a sign that in the coming years the concept of region coding is scrapped in favour of globally compatible releases?
