O filme foi criado por ordem dos líderes políticos dos EUA e da URSS, aquando do encontro entre o Richard Nixon e o Leonid Brezhnev na URSS em 1972.
O objectivo desta co-produção de cinema foi político e fez parte do mesmo acordo entre os dois líderes, que levou à missão-conjunta Appolo-Soyuz em 1975.
