Under the Shadow Trailer Teases The Sundance Horror Movie Breakout


Ever since debuting in early January of this year at the Sundance Film Festival, Under the Shadow has been heralded as a stunning directorial debut from Iranian-born filmmaker Babak Anvari for its inventive take on classic horror genre tropes. Set in post-revolution Tehran in 1988, a young mother and daughter struggle to deal with the torments of their homeland’s immediate civil upheaval – just as a mysterious force of evil simultaneously begins its own assault upon their already-fragile sanity.

After her husband is drafted and called away to fight for the army, young mother and hopeful medical student Shideh (Narges Rashidi) is forced into a state of cloistered isolation after being accused of subversion by the government following the events of the Iran-Iraq war in Under the Shadow. What Shideh didn’t expect was an errant missile to crash land into her home, bringing with it an ancient Middle-Eastern spirit of the wind called Djinn.

In the footage featured above, Under the Shadow is cast against the light of a very real political drama that has its source in recent Middle-Eastern history, coupled with plenty of intimated moments of psychological horror throughout. Whether or not Djinn is an actual presence that will physically manifest itself in Anvari’s feature film is largely left unexplored – though the movie’s first trailer leaves plenty of room for viewers to begin anticipating the terrors soon to come.

Under the Shadow could be another winning independent horror production to match the widespread acclaim of contemporaries such as It Follows and The Witch, making it a must watch movie of late 2016.

Under the Shadow will release October 7, 2016 in theaters and Video on Demand.

Revisando a minha antiga crítica, que postei em últimos filmes assistidos, o filme de terror falado em Persa, filmado em Amman na Jordânia com dinheiro do Qatar e Inglaterra, do diretor iraniano Babak Anvari, quer dizer o set devia ser uma verdadeira torre de babel, mas não se espantem o resultado é um filme simples dentro do gênero, mas bem montado, mas concordando com o nimzabo você sente que precisa de atores ali melhores.

Apreciei bastante este filme, que junto a alguns dos meus preferidos do género dos últimos anos, como Babadook, It Follows, Take Shelter. Sempre pelo mesmo motivo, prefiro o horror que deriva de uma situação de combate a demónios internos e não do sobrenatural por si mesmo. Gosto de um filme que é construído como uma metáfora, o que ajuda a criar mais camadas de complexidade e não se esgotará no horror pelo horror.

Aqui temos o dia a dia no Irão durante a guerra com o Iraque

e a entidade fantasmagórica entra na vida das protagonistas no momento em que um míssil entra no complexo de apartamentos onde moram

Além da questão cultural dos génios por lá serem malévolos (também temos um djinn por cá , achei uma forma original de mostrar o terror constante de viver numa cidade a ser bombardeada diariamente e em guerra. Boa realização, boas prestações e ideias visuais simples e eficazes elevam o filme.

Se virem a lista inicial de filmes que vão construindo o ambiente e as suas intenções com tempo e não esperarem um slasher ou algo assim, acho que não sairão defraudados do filme.

É verdade que apreciei o subtexto social e político do filme - bem como as composições do elenco - mas este falha numa questão fulcral: não amedronta, não mete medo, a atmosfera não causa temor. Vê-se bem, é certo, não ofende a inteligência nem se compromete, mas não está à altura do género em que foi categorizado. Diria que é um drama psicológico.

Salvo erro entrou numa edição recente do livro '1001 movies to see before you die' mas não sei se ainda se mantém.
Já não me lembro do filme mas recupero aqui o que escrevi na altura.

Achei melhor a realização (de algumas cenas) do que a história em si.

Pensei mais no filme. Os espíritos do filme penso que materializam os medos e traumas decorrentes da guerra.
Penso que é a leitura a fazer. É uma forma engenhosa de justificar o terror e nesse particular é um filme especial.
Há algumas cenas, são só duas ou três, de susto súbito que achei muito bem feitas e como disse acima está bem realizado.
Dito isto não daria uma nota muito acima da que tem no imdb.
Falta qualquer coisa mais ao filme na minha opinião.
Talvez um pouco mais de sal ou é a actriz principal... não sei bem o que é.
