Filme biográfico da mulher inglesa Gertrude Margaret Lowthian Bell (14 Julho de 1868 – 12 Julho 1926), arqueóloga e exploradora da Arábia e actualmente listada na categoria de agentes femininas de espionagem, em ambiente de guerra, no Wikipedia (Category:Female wartime spies).


Gertrudes aos 16 anos de idade.

Ela colaborou com o famoso Lawrence da Arábia na formação dos países árabes, escolha dos reis e delineação de fronteiras. Segundo o Wikipedia, alguns dos conflitos actuais do Médio Oriente são o resultado de erros desta mulher, nomeadamente a inclusão do território curdo no norte do Iraque.

Gertrude Margaret Lowthian Bell, CBE (14 July 1868 – 12 July 1926) was an English writer, traveller, political officer, administrator, spy and archaeologist who explored, mapped, and became highly influential to British imperial policy-making due to her knowledge and contacts, built up through extensive travels in Greater Syria, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, and Arabia. Along with T. E. Lawrence, Bell helped establish the Hashemite dynasties in what is today Jordan as well as in Iraq.[2]

She played a major role in establishing and helping administer the modern state of Iraq, utilising her unique perspective from her travels and relations with tribal leaders throughout the Middle East. During her lifetime she was highly esteemed and trusted by British officials and given an immense amount of power for a woman at the time. She has been described as "one of the few representatives of His Majesty's Government remembered by the Arabs with anything resembling affection"

Gostei do filme, faz algumas pontes com os clássicos do Herzog sobre pessoas obcecadas e aventurosas, como o Fizcarraldo, Cobra Verde e Aguirre.

Sumptuosamente filmado, com excelentes atores, mas é um filme mais intimista, não é um épico à David Lean.
